A Guide To Healthy Living | Bonnie Battles Back
Bonnie is a prime example of how will and determination can help us overcome life’s obstacles. She has resurrected her physical fitness after fighting through some serious health conditions, “I struggled with eating disorders, both Anorexia and Bulimia,” the mother of two admits.
Moreover, with the potential of inheriting diseases that have plagued her family for generations, she is determined to fight against it as her father did. “Alzheimer’s is hereditary in my family as well, with my dad being diagnosed at age 48, who [is] now 64 and doing great, [and you] can’t even tell he has it!”
And she expects regular exercise to do the same for her.
This is where her belief of being physically healthy stems from, as opposed to simply aspiring to look like a runway model. “It’s not the outward appearance that matters most, it’s being healthy and being there for [your] family!”
Now that she lives healthy the right way, the Louisiana native has transitioned into teaching others how to do the same, “I’m a personal trainer, kickboxing and body strength instructor at Anytime Fitness in West Monroe, La.” A BodyPreserver at its best!
A Guide To Healthy Living
Unlike myself, Bonnie uses more of “surgical” approach to nutrition facts, paying attention to every detail. “I count calories and totally go by serving size!” says the health food connoisseur.
Although, we definitely have one thing in common with our diets in that we prefer either grilled or baked chicken and fish, vegetables, and fruit instead of candy or desserts. This seems to be the premier method amongst health advocates when it comes to trying to gain a lean and toned body so I’ll stick with it.
HER MEAL PLAN
“Everything [is] measured, [I] don’t want to go over serving sizes.”
Breakfast A healthy cereal or an Advocare breakfast bar
Mid-Morning Snack Peanuts or (natural) peanut butter and honey with a few wheat thins
Lunch Chicken grilled or chicken salad
Mid-Day Snack Fruit
Dinner Fish, chicken or turkey with steamed veggies
Snack Before Bed Fruit

I must admit that I’m thoroughly impressed with her endurance levels and will to conquer long distances. Her fitness goal is to actually run an entire marathon (26 miles), “I love to run!”, she spiritedly stated, “I’ve done a 5k and 10k.” There is no way to fake endurance as one has to be in peek physical condition to run this far non-stop.
Bonnie’s Healthy Weight Loss Workout
It didn’t take long for the mother of 2 to drop her baby weight from her 2nd daughter (now 3 years old), because 5 months after giving birth she was right back down to her pre-pregnancy size and weight. Her approach to fitness is more sports and body weight based with a sprinkle of weights. The weekly routine, the 35 year old kickboxing coach uses, requires a maximum 1 hour a day and 5 days a week with 2 days rest.
“My workouts target every area!”
Monday Total Body Strength (1 hour)= V-Ups, planks, side plank w/ leg lift, hydrants, arms, shoulder press, plank, froggers w/shoulder press, barbell squats, lunges on leg press, lat rows, hour of arms and floor exercises targeting the whole body
Tuesday 1-hour of Kickboxing
Wednesday 1-hour of Kickboxing
Thursday 45 minutes of Kickboxing
Saturday 30 minutes of Total Body Strength and 30 min of Kickboxing
WHY SHE’S SUCCESSFUL
Bonnie practices what she preaches as a personal trainer, both in the gym and in the kitchen. “The main thing I tell my clients and members is you HAVE to incorporate a healthy diet with your exercises!”
“It just won’t work by just working out,” but believes it has to be a change in overall mentality to make a solid transformation, “It’s a lifestyle change!”
As a means to conquer her unhealthy weight loss methods, she decided to take on Billy Blanks world famous “TaeBo” workouts in the privacy of her own home.
“I started doing TaeBo over 10 years ago, just in my home and loved it!” This proved to be the start of her transformation and also where she fell in love with the kickboxing workouts that she now teaches.
“I love helping others,” she declared.
As her classes are growing steadily with over 25 students in some sessions, hopefully she can be an inspiration and spark the same transformation of all who participate.
And her next step in the process…”I’m working towards a fitness competition, [and I'm] pretty excited!”
Let’s stay tuned…
