In our quest to get back in shape and look younger we are always on the lookout for exercises or workouts that might light a spark and reactivate our younger, fitter self. According to a new study, one of the best antiaging workout may have been around for quite some time in High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) for weight-loss and antiaging.
HIIT is a strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods. HIIT is the concept where one performs a short burst of high-intensity exercise followed by a brief low-intensity activity, repeatedly, until too exhausted to continue.
Mayo Clinic researchers recently tested 3 different forms of exercise high-intensity interval training, compound training, and resistance training. While they all were found beneficial in creating leaner muscle; HIIT increased aerobic capacity, mitochondrial functionality, and muscle protein.
But most importantly, it boosted the cellular machinery necessary for the construction of new proteins. Protein creation and synthesis reverse some of the problematic effects of the aging process.
Hence, while simple resistance training does build muscle, HIIT positively affects the aging process molecularly by revitalizing the body’s protein function.
Also, the study results showed that the older volunteers experienced a 20% higher boost in mitochondrial stores (which help with metabolism and energy production). These usually are on a gradual decline as we age, therefore keeping them intact aides in the loss of body fat, increase in muscle, and overall energy levels.
Therefore, instead of sticking to your regular weekly workout regimen in the quest to keep looking and feeling your best, try to mix it up a little. Continue your cardio for fat burning and resistance training for muscle tone, but add in HIIT workouts to rejuvenate your youth.
Looking and feeling younger are obtainable with the right knowledge and dedication!
